I’m the author of Running Toward Home, a memoir about the body, aging, and the long road toward making peace with both. Before that: three editor-in-chief roles, three books on running, an Emmy nomination, and a strategic communications firm working on complex issues.

Dagny Scott - a woman with curly blonde hair, wearing a beige V-neck sweater and gold earrings, standing against a gray brick wall, looking at the camera with a confident expression.

As a writer and editor, my work has reached millions of readers and shaped conversations on women's health, sports, and social impact.

I'm the author of Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running (Rodale Books, 2000), which sold more than a quarter of a million copies and became the top-selling women's running book of its time.

I’ve just completed Running Toward Home: Finding beauty, authenticity and freedom in an aging body, a literary memoir and manifesto that grew out of my craving for a positive narrative for this later stage of life.

One morning a few years ago, I swung my legs over the side of my bed, and the floor came up to meet my face. The diagnosis was vestibular migraine. The real message was something else: Stop.

Running Toward Home

Finding beauty, authenticity, and freedom in an aging body

Dagny Scott - a woman with a walking stick standing on a rocky terrain with large rock formations and a cloudy sky in the background.

“This body… The things I’ve asked of this body. From the moment I was aware of it, I asked this body to change.”

So begins Running Toward Home, a literary memoir that speaks to the larger cultural issue of women’s aging. The book interrogates what happens when a woman hellbent on forward motion is finally, forcibly, stopped, and what becomes possible in the stillness. It is also a manifesto for women aging today, permission to stop performing and reclaim body and self in the second half of life.

LITERARY MEMOIR.
COMPLETE AT APPROXIMATELY 60,000 WORDS.

Runner

Through it all there’s been running. From tagging along with my brother as a kid to being the only girl on the boys’ cross country team post-Title IX in high school. I trained, I raced, I ran pre- and post-partum, and I’ve written about it all. Just about every lesson I’ve learned in life has come from running. These days I’m appreciative of every step.
